Many visitors to the area exploit the growth of the low fares airlines using Beauvais airport, located 125 km north of Magny Le Hongre. Originally a military airfield dating back to the 1930’s, Beauvais has developed rapidly since 1997 and now processes over 4 million passengers each year, making it the 10th busiest airport in France. The decision by Ryanair in 1997 to develop Dublin to Paris routes through Beauvais saw the development of the airport into two passenger terminals and modern facilities, a far cry from its original state where it had little more than a 1970’s hangar. Building on Ryanair’s success Wizz Air and Blue Air also developed services to the airport from eastern europe.
The airport’s past from the 1940’s is still clear to see to this day, scars from war can be found. NATO also still use the airport as a landing relief ground, maintaining the military link.
