Guide on How To Transfer From Charles de Gaulle (CDG) Airport To Mont St (Saint) Michel
A rocky islet near the coast of Normandy, known by the name of Mont Tombe until 708 AD, when according to the legend the Archbishop of Avranches had a vision of Saint Michael ordering him to build a church on it. Accessible through centuries only by a tidal causeway it was a place of many failed sieges during the medieval period. Most notably during the Hundred Years’ War. One such siege by forces of English Plantagenet King Henry VI, in 1434, is considered an event that has inspired the French populace, particularly Joan d’Arc. Until the period of Reformation, it was a very popular pilgrimage site. By the time of the French Revolution, the abbey has become almost abandoned, so it was closed and converted to a prison for opponents of the revolutionary regime. In 1863 a campaign which included many prominent French intellectuals, including Victor Hugo, was launched as an effort to restore this architectural treasure. Since 1979, Le Mont-Saint-Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
